The New York Post reports that, in addition to the lucrative nine-year-$324 million contract, Garret Cole was wooded to join the Yankees with the help of the legendary Masseto. Apparently, the very attentive clubhouse manager, Lou Cucuzza, remembered Cole speaking of a recent trip to Italy with his wife, where they were treated to a bottle of one of the words best wines. When team manager Aaron Boone later met with Cole to discuss his contract, he brought with him both the 2004 and 2005 Masseto as a welcoming gesture.
In an interview, Cole says that Masseto is “Commonly acknowledged as the second-best merlot in the would outside of Petrus, which would be in France… It’s definitely my favorite bottle. I did the ancestry thing and I am 35 to 37 percent Italian, so Italian’s top-notch bottle being Masseto, so it’s close to my heart.”
